Course Overview:
This course explores crime assessment as a method of criminal behavior analysis used to evaluate evidence, offender actions, and crime scene characteristics to better understand criminal motives, methods, and opportunities. Participants will examine major offender sub-types (Power-Assertive, Power-Reassurance, Anger Retaliatory, and Anger-Excitation) across the criminological continuum and learn how behavioral patterns can help investigators narrow suspect pools, connect related crimes, and develop effective investigative and interview strategies. Through real-world case studies, the course demonstrates how criminal behavior analysis can support investigations involving violent, sexual, and non-sexual crimes.
The course was developed utilizing the research that was conducted by Richard D. Walter, Forensic Psychologist, and Robert D. Keppel, retired Chief Criminal Investigator for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office.
