MEMBERSHIP

For over 50 years, the Southern Association of Forensic Scientists has served a distinguished group of professional members in a variety of different forensic disciplines. SAFS counts over 250 members in its ranks and continues to provide support to the forensic community
through its offerings in continuing education, peer guidance, and professional networking opportunities.

There are four types of membership available to qualifying forensic scientists:

Student Affiliate: membership available to any student enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university, whose major field of study leads to becoming a forensic scientist.

Associate Member:  membership available to individuals who do not or have not yet met the education, experience, or meeting attendance requirements for full membership.  Requirement for associate membership:  working full time in a forensic science laboratory doing or having done examinations and/or interpretations of physical evidence or full time in forensic science education.

Member: full membership available to individuals who meet the following requirements:  must possess a four-year Baccalaureate Degree or have ten years of experience working in a forensic discipline; have completed three years of either full time forensic laboratory experience or work full-time forensic science education at an accredited college or university; have attended an Annual Meeting of SAFS.

Retired Member: membership available to SAFS members in good standing who have retired from the professional forensics community but wish to remain active in the organization.  To request retired status, a member must log into their member account at safs1966.org.   It is an option under “View profile” on the “Your account” page tab.

Applications for associate member and member must be submitted by March 1st with all required supporting documentation submitted by April 1st to be considered for membership at the Annual Business Meeting.

Applications for student affiliate are accepted on a rolling basis. Student affiliate membership terminates annually (August 1st) but can be renewed through reapplication.

Upon acceptance of your membership, you will receive a welcome letter from the SAFS Secretary and login information for the SAFS website.

Should you have any questions about membership in SAFS, please contact our membership committee chairman.
